Surviving Haley

Format: Digital

Lauren Werthman struggles with guilt and depression. Even moving to another state and into a new home doesn't help her overcome the life-altering aftermath of losing her sister. Memories of the tragic accident reverberate through her life as her family tries to cope, but Lauren's life spirals out of control. Her mother criticizes her choices every day, her father continues to work later and later, and people at her new school seem to know the family secret. Lauren binge-eats, has nightmares, and doubts the existence of a God Who didn't intervene to prevent the senseless tragedy. As Lauren's family and friends work through the pain and guilt, will they find that even though the void will always remain, the power of forgiveness brings peace and hope and a bright future, or will Lauren forever be lost to the pain and guilt?

My Thoughts:
Surviving Haley was an awesome book. I was hooked as soon as I read the first page. I do wish it had been longer and that perhaps there was some closer at the end but overall this was a great book. I would recommend this book for teens and young adults, especially Christian teens. I fell in love with Jonah and wished I had a friend like him in high school. Jonah is the perfect example that Christians are not perfect and that every day they try and live the way God wants them to. I would love to buy this book and give it out to the youth at my church.

The Snow Queen - ★★★★★

The Snow Queen

By: Hans Christian Anderson (translated to English by Misha Hoekstra)

Pub: June 7, 2016 (originally published in 1844)

Format: Digital

Note: I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

When Kay is cursed by a magic mirror, he can no longer perceive goodness in anything - not his best friend Gerda, nor the roses in the garden. One wintery evening, he is kidnapped by the wicked Snow Queen and swept away to live for ever in her kingdom of ice.

Friendless and shoe-less, Gerda must travel through inhospitable lands, with only crows to guide her and bandits for company, in order to find her beloved friend. And when she gets there, how will she melt the ice in his heart?

Nearly two centuries after its first publication, The Snow Queen endures as a tale of love and loss, good and evil, and loyalty in the face of great hardships.

My thoughts:
I had heard about The Snow Queen and had not read it until now. I was surprised that the main character of the book is not the Snow Queen but a girl named Gerda and her quest to find her friend Kai. I had no idea that this was a children’s book, I absolutely loved it. The main thing that made me love this book is that it is Christian based. It begins with the Devil and his mirror and as the story unfolds at the end Gerda is seeking God to protect her. One of my favorite lines would have to be. “I can’t give the girl more power than she already has! Can’t you see how powerful she is?” Gerda is a powerful girl, she manages to go off on her own to look for Kai and along the way she makes new friends that help her out. I would definitely recommend this book to people of all ages. I know I will be reading this story to my nephew.
